NIGHT IN THE OPERA REVIEW BY DOUBLEGAMES

The role of a faceless detective, called to investigate another murder, is pretty familiar for us. At first sight, Big Fish Games offers us a standard Hidden Object adventure puzzle with lots of rooms and locations to explore... Read more

However, calling Night in the Opera a pure Hidden Object or even an adventure title would be giving this game too much credit. Ultimately, this is a strange Match-3 and Hidden Object hybrid game with frequent flaws.

Firstly, the game offers a completely linear gameplay without any gems or surprises. The mechanics of the game goes like this: there is a low amount of objects to be found in the scenery and after that you are constantly sent to play match-three levels. To crown it all, Night in the Opera badly lacks for animation in these match-three scenes. Beside they are mostly horrible in design, there are no modern visual effects. This fact makes them all static and absolutely plain, leaving no chance for the overall gameplay. Moreover, you are not allowed to leave freely these match-three scenes, as the game’s plot progression is closely connected with their results.

As for hidden object scenes, this work is fairly well-executed but you can see them there too rare. We are sure, it would have been better to have more hidden object puzzles there, rather than these odd match-3 ones. The only good things are the artwork and the nice opera arias.

Summing up, Night in the Opera looks like an unfinished title. There’s very poor attention to details, poor match-three puzzles and too short gameplay. Well, if you have no business to do or don’t care what to play, welcome to Night in the Opera. But we can hardly ever recommend this game for Hidden Object as well as Match-3 connoisseurs.
