SHIVER 3: MOONLIT GROVE COLLECTOR'S EDITION REVIEW BY DOUBLEGAMES

Being a common legend of the European folklore, stories about werewolves were spread by word of mouth and fiction genre. They said werewolf was a human being who was able to transform his or her body into a wolf or wolf-like creature. These legends successfully filtered into a mass mind and consolidated there. The werewolf concept was also reflected in the modern pop culture. A great number of movies and related stuff have been produced. What about the game world? It could not be uninvolved, of course. Today’s topic for a review is a new Hidden Object game named Shiver 3: Moonlit Grove. In this game we are going to clash with representatives of the well-known spooky legends face-to-face. Does Artogon Games manage to realize the story about werewolves truly? Let us find out... Read more

The game begins with the introductory cutscene. It shows us the moving carriage with one harnessed horse. It is steered by the protagonist. At the same time, the story begins to be narrated. You are suggested getting used to the role of a main character who searches for his foster father. Twenty years ago orphaned child was found by Rene Malot – a district doctor. He raised this child like the own one. Four years ago Rene disappeared. Since that time grown up orphan had not been giving up a hope to find him. Being offered father’s position, he headed to the same district where Rene served as a doctor. However, the trouble caught him on the way. A wolf ran out onto the earth road and scared the horse. It resulted in an upset of the carriage. Regaining the consciousness, you found yourself close to the dark grove. Only one village was nearby, so you decided to visit it expecting to get some help. Adventures would not keep your waiting. You must understand how exactly this village connects with you and Rene and what roles the werewolves are playing in all this mess. Right from the start you will get the diary and some other stuff. The diary will keep all textual findings including the press-cuttings and other useful information. After that, a lantern will be able to be picked up. It is helpful while looking-for in the unlit spots. Hidden Object scenes in this game are few and far-between. You will get some kind of the puzzled objects: to gain an item you must solve a riddle first. Puzzles prevail over HOS without doubt. The riddles and mini-games cannot be characterized as mind-bending. They can be passed easily. An interactive map is not added, so be ready to go back at the previously visited areas sometimes. The next section will be devoted to the visuals and audio.

The graphic presentation of the Moonlit Grove leaves much to be desired. The graphics in the cutscenes must be refined a little bit. Even the barely visible shortcomings are able to spoil the whole perception. On the contrary, an audio aspect exceeds all expectations. The voiceovers are chosen smartly and carefully. The music score impress us most of all. The spooky atmosphere created by dark palette is marvelously supported by awesome ambient music. Other sound effects do not make a mess as well.

What can we say in conclusion? Unfortunately, Shiver 3: Moonlit Grove turned out to be weaker than previously released titles from this famous franchise. It seemed that the full amount of work was not just done. The idea was great, but an ultimate aim was left unhit. The flaws of the graphic presentation zeroized all chances for this game. At least the werewolves were great and believable.
