One of the first computer games was developed in 1961, while PC gaming business started booming only in the 1990s. Now it is a multi-billion dollar industry with over two billion game titles sold. Recently Global PC Software Association announced a rather surprising list of 10 Top Selling PC Games of All Times. (Calculations included international online and offline sales).

The Sims

The Sims lack specific goals or objectives, which is not common for computer games. Instead the game focuses entirely on the lives of virtual people called Sims, letting the player control their virtual "world" and their daily routines like eating, sleeping, bathing or reading. The Sims sold 16 million copies.

World of Warcraft

In World of Warcraft players control a character within a persistent game world, exploring the landscape, fighting monsters, performing quests, building skills and interacting with each other. The game rewards are money, items, experience and reputation, which allow players to improve their skill and power.

Lineage 2

Lineage 2, medieval-style virtual world, offers 5 races: Humans, Elves, Dark Elves, Dwarves and Orcs, and each race has its own set of classes. Players do a variety of things like fighting monsters, developing professional skills and completing quests alone or in a group.

Guild Wars

Guild Wars depict the history of fictional fantasy world of Tyria. Each campaign is independent of others, with its own co-operative storyline, campaign-specific skills, and competitive arenas. Campaigns are roughly parallel in time, although they take place in disjoint sections of the world.

In Diner Dash player takes the role of Flo, a stockbroker who quits her job to run her own diner. New game settings are provided by 4 restaurants which Flo builds while upgrading dilapidated buildings. Each level has a time limit and a money goal to reach.

Starcraft

Starcraft, military science strategy game, centers on the acquisition and control of two resources: minerals and vespene gas. Resource management, expansion to control resource locations and effective defensive and offensive tactics are key to victory. This popular game sold 9,5 million copies.

Myst

Myst features a first-person journey through an interactive world. The game unfolds at its own pace as there is no obvious enemy, no physical violence, no definite time limit and even no clear objective. To complete the game one must be patient, attentive and logical.

Bejeweled 2

The objective of Bejeweled 2 is to swap one gem with an adjacent one to form a chain of three or more gems. When such a chain is created, the gems disappear, causing randomly generated gems to fall from the top to take the gem's place.

Half-Life

Half-Life is set in a remote desert area of New Mexico in the Black Mesa Research Facility, where Gordon Freeman, the game's protagonist, is trapped between two sides: hostile aliens and the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit. Player's tasks vary as Freeman tries to find a way out. Half-Life had over 8 million customers.

The Sims 2

In Sims 2 players are free to control their Sims engaging in various daily activities and forming relationships like in real life. Sims 2, unlike its predecessor, has life goals, wants and fears, fullfillment of which can produce both positive and negative outcomes.
