Far Cry 2

One of the most popular Ubisoft game series - Far Cry spawned a sequel back in 2008. At the time, it was a revolutionary FPS with an open world and decent multiplayer mode that featured every technical aspect from the singleplayer campaign. There isn't much to say story-wise. You're assuming a role of a hired gun thrown in an ongoing conflict between corrupt warlords somewhere in Africa battling malaria (don't forget to take a pill approximately every 35 minutes). The huge 50km2 open-world map can be traversed either on foot (not recommended!) or using transport (behind the wheel of borrowed vehicles or by taking a bus). The game has unique gunplay. Each piece of weapon feels and acts differently and you'll have to accommodate to it to land more precise shots. Another gem is in an entirely destructible environment. Thanks to the perfect debut of the Dunia Engine, the graphics, and physics in the game are top-notch and look pretty even now. And RealTree technology incorporated in its core gives realistic deterioration of vehicles and weapons. You'll also notice the day-and-night cycle as well as tree and vegetation regeneration in Far Cry 2 which are quite impressive and well-done.
